OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness) is the standard metric for measuring how effectively a manufacturing operation is used. It combines three factors into a single percentage:
OEE = Availability × Performance × Quality
The three factors
- Availability — the share of planned production time the equipment is actually running, after subtracting unplanned stops, changeovers and breakdowns.
- Performance — how close the line runs to its ideal cycle time, accounting for minor stops and reduced speed.
- Quality — the proportion of good parts produced, excluding scrap and rework.
What is a good OEE score?
An OEE of 100% means you are producing only good parts, as fast as possible, with no stop time. As a rough guide, 85% is considered world-class for discrete manufacturing, around 60% is typical, and 40% is common for plants that have not yet started measuring. Even a few points of improvement usually translate into significant recovered capacity.

OEE turns vague impressions of “the line runs badly” into a measurable, improvable number, and it pinpoints whether your losses come from downtime, speed, or quality — so you fix the right problem first.
