PLC vs PAC: What’s the Difference?

Both a PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) and a PAC (Programmable Automation Controller) control machines and processes — but they suit different jobs.

PLC

A PLC is a rugged, reliable controller optimised for fast, deterministic discrete logic — starting motors, reading sensors, sequencing machines. It is cost-effective and proven for the large majority of machine-control tasks.

PAC

A PAC extends that foundation with more memory, more processing power and a single platform that handles logic, motion, process control and safety together. PACs typically use a PC-based architecture, richer programming environments and easier integration with databases and IT systems.

Which should you use?

  • Choose a PLC for focused machine control, discrete logic and cost-sensitive applications.
  • Choose a PAC when you need to combine motion, process and safety, handle large data sets, or integrate tightly with higher-level systems.
